[From Excellent Reception : Episode 1]
By lil’dave
Phony PPL are a band out of Brooklyn who make jazzy R&B and hiphop with the mentality of a bedroom producer. Even though they are pretty much fresh out of high school, they have a sound far beyond their years and they have a few releases already under their belts.
Their current album “Yesterday’s Tomorrow” is their most polished work to date. It’s full of mellow grooves, lush string arrangements, smooth horn sections, beautiful vocals, and off the cuff rhymes. I feel like this is the type of music that Steely Dan would have made if they were growing up in the 2000’s.
The song that really captured my attention was their lead single “Why iii Love The Moon”. It’s hard not to feel something when hear this song for the first time. It has a gentleness and honesty that is so rare in music these days. I was amazed to learn that this song was born by accident during a jam session while the record button happened to be on. It’s safe to say that they captured a magical moment.
